St Augustine -Girls in Golf

On the outskirts of Brisbane, girls golf may rightfully so be the talk of the town.

At St Augustine College, just 1.5km from Brookwater Golf and Country Club, it seems many teenage girls are starting to talk.

This is thanks to the Australian Golf Foundation Junior Girls Golf Scholarship program and Sporting Schools.

“To promote golf to girls, I have aligned with a local school,” explains John Collins, Head Golf Professional at Brookwater GC. “The Sporting Schools program has enabled the school to be pro-active towards promoting golf and providing opportunities for their students to participate.”

Following on from the good work through Sporting Schools and always looking for ways to grow the junior development program, John saw the girls-only scholarship program as a perfect fit.

“We now have five girls enjoying the scholarship program, and with all the girls attending the same school, it is starting to create an interest from other girls as they are talking about the program at school.

“At this stage, the girls are primarily looking to have fun and are enjoying being around other girls of a similar age. They take great satisfaction in improving their ability to hit the ball further and closer to the hole during our training sessions.

“My hope for the program is that it can continue year-after-year and provide a pathway for many girls to participate and progress into playing competitions and obtaining a handicap.”
